In 1992, a group of Panamanian women living in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area united around a shared mission: to support education, health, and the social advancement of communities in need. After many years in the United States, they were inspired to strengthen cross-cultural understanding among people in the U.S., Panama, and across Latin America.

Under the leadership of Carlota Pardini Ellrodt, the group formally established a nonprofit organization to create a structured and sustainable way to provide financial assistance to social programs in Panama and the greater D.C. region.

From the outset, fundraising became the foundation of their work. Early efforts included a fashion show hosted at the residence of the Panamanian Ambassador in Washington, D.C. Over the years, the organization has continued to host cultural and community events such as traditional celebrations, afternoon teas, masquerade balls, auctions, luncheons, and gala dinners at respected institutions throughout the region. These gatherings not only raised critical funds but also celebrated Panamanian culture and strengthened community ties.

A meaningful tradition of Fundación Panama is the annual celebration of Panamanian Mother’s Day on December 8. Each year, the organization donates a basket of baby essentials to the first newborn of the day — alternating between a baby girl and a baby boy — born to a family in need at a Washington, D.C. hospital. In addition, members organize an annual toy drive, collecting and distributing gifts to children from low-income families through local partner organizations prior to Christmas.

Membership in Fundación Panama is open to Panamanians, spouses of Panamanians, and individuals with meaningful ties to Panama who are committed to giving back, deepening their connection to the country, and contributing their time to programs that serve underserved communities.

Today, members are based primarily in the Washington, D.C. region, with others across the United States and in Panama.

My vision for the future of our Fundacion Panama is to remain steadfast (o usamos la palabra solid) in our mission to alleviate poverty, raise social awareness, and provide critical assistance to social programs across the Republic of Panama and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. To continue to be deeply committed to promoting cultural diversity and fostering a meaningful cross-cultural understanding between the people of the United States, Panama, and Latin America. I have immense confidence in the collective strength of our Board of Directors and our partners. Their dedication to serve those in need with genuine care is the cornerstone of our success. As Mother Teresa beautifully stated, “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” Thank you for your unwavering support and for everything you do to further our mission. </html>
